Sport Sandals & Slides

Sport sandals with heel straps offer more restraint against the foot sliding out during a step, while open-backed slides make frequent removal easier but leave the heel unsecured. Start with the walking you expect to do: a slide can suit short trips between the changing room and poolside, while longer walks or uneven paths make secure fastening a more consequential choice.

For sustained walking, look at where the straps adjust and whether they can hold your foot securely without pressing across the toes or ankle. Separate adjustment across the forefoot and around the heel can help accommodate feet that need different amounts of room in those areas. With slides, the upper needs to hold the foot comfortably enough that you do not curl your toes to keep the footwear on. Use the listing’s sizing guidance and foot measurements, including width where provided; your toes and heel should sit within the footbed edges. If you expect to wear socks, account for their thickness when assessing the space beneath the straps.

Underfoot feel and outsole design are the next decisions. A deeply contoured footbed needs its arch shape to line up comfortably with your foot, while a flatter footbed places less emphasis on that alignment. Thick or soft cushioning can feel comfortable initially, but assess whether the sole provides the firmness you prefer for sustained walking instead of choosing by thickness alone. For loose paths, look for defined tread and an outsole described for that terrain. For wet changing-room floors, seek specific guidance about wet-surface traction; rugged-looking tread does not tell you how the outsole grips smooth tiles.

Before buying for poolside or beach use, establish whether the footwear is intended for repeated wetting or immersion. Start with Water resistant in the water-resistance filter, then read the stated conditions: that label does not tell you whether the straps dry quickly or the footbed sheds water. For upkeep, follow the care instructions for the upper and footbed separately, especially where leather, fabric and foam are combined; confirm whether rinsing is permitted and whether drying requires avoiding direct heat.
