Overview

An AC1200 dual-band gigabit router with four gigabit LAN ports and WPA3 security, built for a household mixing wired and wireless devices on a standard internet plan.

AC1200 places this in TP-Link's entry to mid tier, combining 300Mbps on 2.4GHz with up to 900Mbps on 5GHz. The four gigabit LAN ports matter as much as the wireless numbers for anyone running a wired desktop, NAS or game console alongside WiFi devices, since many routers at this price still ship with only 100Mbps ports.

  • AC1200 dual band, 300Mbps plus 900Mbps
  • 4 gigabit LAN ports
  • 4 external antennas with beamforming
  • WPA3 security and OneMesh support

Who it's for

Fits a household or small home office replacing an ISP-supplied router or an aging older one, especially where several devices connect by ethernet. Not built for a large multi-floor home needing whole-home mesh out of the box, though it can pair with a OneMesh extender.

Strengths and trade-offs

Drawn from this product's published specifications.

What stands out
  • Four gigabit LAN ports for wired devices
  • WPA3 security support
  • AP mode adds flexibility beyond router-only use
  • Works with major ISPs including AT&T, Xfinity and Spectrum
What to check first
  • No built-in mesh, needs a separate OneMesh extender for whole-home coverage
  • A modem is required separately for most ISP setups

Performance notes

Four external antennas with beamforming technology focus the WiFi signal toward connected devices rather than broadcasting it evenly in all directions, aimed at extending range. MU-MIMO on the 5GHz band lets multiple devices get full-speed service at once instead of taking turns, and AP mode lets the same hardware run as an access point on an existing wired network instead of as the primary router.

Frequently asked

Questions about the TP-Link Archer A6

Common buyer questions answered straight from the product spec data - no fluff, no "it depends".

How many wired devices can connect to the Archer A6?

It has 4 gigabit LAN ports for wired connections.

Does the Archer A6 need a separate modem?

Yes, a modem is required for most internet service providers since this is a router, not a modem-router combo.

Can this router extend coverage to a larger home?

It supports TP-Link OneMesh, so adding a OneMesh extender combines them into one network name.
