Overview
Not a stovetop or electric steamer, this Cuisinart steamer is a plastic vessel for cooking with steam inside the microwave. Steaming helps retain flavors, textures and nutrients, according to the description.
The reason to buy is a simple way to steam fresh food in minutes without a separate appliance. The limitation is plastic construction and no stated heat limit, so follow the maker's instructions closely.
Who it's for
Dorm and office cooks and anyone with limited kitchen space will use it for quick, healthy side dishes. Cooks who steam large batches or prefer metal should look elsewhere.
Pros and cons
- Steams food in the microwave
- Plastic, light to handle
- Recipes mentioned in the description
- Plastic, not metal or glass
- Dishwasher use not stated
- Capacity limits batch size
Performance notes
Water heated in the microwave turns to steam inside the vessel, which cooks food gently without direct heat. Steaming retains more flavor and nutrients than boiling, as the description notes. Cook times depend on the microwave power and the amount of food.
