Best forYou need affordable dual-band Wi-Fi for a small home and don't plan on wired gigabit connections.

A workable budget router for a Wi-Fi-only household, undermined by Fast Ethernet ports that will bottleneck any wired gigabit device.

Overview

The TP-Link Archer A54 is a dual-band AC1200 router built for basic home networking, covering up to 1,000 square feet with four external antennas.

The wireless side is fairly standard AC1200 fare, but the wired side is worth noting before buying: its four LAN ports run at 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet, not gigabit, so anyone connecting a NAS or a gaming PC by cable will be capped well below what the Wi-Fi itself can carry. It's built as an entry point router, with access point mode and EasyMesh support letting it plug into a larger setup later.

  • AC1200 dual band, up to 867 + 300 Mbps
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq ft
  • WPA3 security
  • EasyMesh compatible

Who it's for

Suits smaller households whose devices connect wirelessly and whose needs are checking email, streaming and browsing rather than local wired transfers. Not the right router for anyone wiring a NAS, a gaming PC or another device that needs gigabit wired speeds.

Strengths and trade-offs

Drawn from this product's published specifications.

What stands out
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq ft with four antennas
  • WPA3 security support
  • EasyMesh compatible for expanding coverage
  • Doubles as an access point on wired networks
What to check first
  • LAN ports run at 10/100Mbps, not gigabit
  • No 6GHz band

Performance notes

TP-Link rates the Archer A54 at up to 867Mbps on the 5GHz band and 300Mbps on 2.4GHz, for a combined 1200Mbps, with actual throughput depending on distance and walls as with any router. It supports WPA3 encryption, IGMP proxy and snooping for IPTV traffic, and access point mode to repurpose it inside a larger network. EasyMesh compatibility lets it pair with another EasyMesh router or extender for wider coverage rather than relying on antenna range alone.
