Overview
Not a wooden ukulele, the Kala Waterman is molded from recycled ABS composite, in a soprano body with Aquila strings. The matte aqua finish glows in the dark, and a tote bag with a quick start guide comes in the box.
Durability is the reason to look: a plastic body shrugs off the humidity and knocks that trouble a wooden uke, so it can go to the beach or a campsite. The limit is tone and feel, which are balanced and clear but not the warmth of tonewood.
Who it's for
A beach, boat or campfire setting suits this instrument, as does a first ukulele for a child or beginner. Anyone who wants a concert or tenor body, or a natural wood finish, should look elsewhere.
Pros and cons
- Recycled ABS composite body
- Glow-in-the-dark Aqua Mist finish
- Aquila B-Blacks strings fitted
- Suits right and left handed players
- Plastic lacks tonewood warmth
- Weight not listed
- Glow finish may not suit all tastes
Performance notes
The composite body does not swell or crack with humidity, so tuning is steadier outdoors than on a wooden body. Aquila strings give a balanced, clear sound, and the soprano size produces the bright, short-sustain voice typical of small ukuleles. Fresh strings need a few days of retuning.
